Practical Herbs to Grow in a Shade Garden
Jan 11th 2012, 04:52

Although herbs have the reputation of being sun lovers, there are many that like a partial shade garden and some that are happy in a shade garden that has very little sun. Herb gardens are very beautiful and practical, and the applications of herbs are many and varied. They can be grown for medicinal uses, cosmetic uses, household uses, for crafts and for culinary uses. I would like to introduce you to a few of my favorites. Peppermint (mentha x piperata) is a culinary herb, cosmetic herb, craft herb and tea herb as well as a medicinal herb. My peppermint is growing in almost full shade and is very happy. It will also grow in partial shade. Peppermint is used for skin and hair care. It makes a delicious tea, and is good for the digestive system. I add the leaves to other drinks as well. Lemonade with peppermint leaves added is one of my favorites. Mints are digestive aids and reduce flatulence. An infusion of peppermint is good as a facial steam for cleansing the skin, and is also used as a rinse for oily hair. Peppermint has so many good properties, anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic and antiviral. It also stimulates the liver and gallbladder increasing the flow of bile. There are many other mints that you may want to consider growing as well. Types of Mints for the Shade Garden Ginger mint (mentha x gentilis) Eau de Cologne Mint (mentha x piperata var.citrata ) has thin smooth leaves and purple runners with purplish flowers. In full sun it develops a strong eau-de-cologne scent and the whole plant is tinged purple. In shade the color is more of a copper color. It is used in potpourri and to make a honey-sweetened drink. The flavor is not good for mint sauce. Spearmint (mentha spicata ) is popular for making a mint sauce and is the most generally cultivated of the culinary mints. It is used to flavor vinegars, vegetables and desserts. Spearmint makes a wonderful tea. Applemint (x rotundifolia) and (mentha suaveolens) is also known as round-leaved mint. It has wrinkled leaves and is used for mint sauces, flavoring vinegars, vegetables and desserts. Applemint teas are popular drinks. Pineapple Mint (mentha variegata ) is also known as Variegated Apple Mint. Its leaves are splashed with a creamy white color. Bowles’ Mint (mentha x villosa var. alopecuroides) tolerates dry soil somewhat and is said to make a very good mint sauce. Horse Mint (mentha longifolia) has grayish and hairy leaves and has a somewhat musty smell. It is not recommended for culinary use.

Simplicity Strive Heartburn
Acid Reflux Cures and Treatments
Jan 11th 2012, 07:48

If you frequently suffer from heartburn, indigestion, or acid reflux, cures and treatments are something that you often look for. Acid reflux is caused by stomach acid, or food, backing up into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation after eating. This can happen because the muscle at the bottom of the esophagus does not close properly, or because of added pressure on the abdomen from pregnancy or obesity. One of the first steps to take to cure acid reflux is to make lifestyle changes. Avoid foods that act as triggers for your acid reflux. These can include spicy foods, chocolate, acidic foods like oranges and tomatoes, fried foods and alcohol. Stop smoking, and lose weight if needed. Eating smaller meals, more frequently can lessen the symptoms of acid reflux. If lifestyle changes are not enough to cure your acid reflux, the next step is to take medication. Common over the counter medications include antacids, or foaming agents. Antacids use a combination of salts to neutralize the acid in your stomach, foaming agents work by covering your stomach lining with foam to prevent reflux. Another type of medication is called H2 blockers. These are available in both over the counter and prescription strength. These medications provide short-term treatment for the symptoms of acid reflux. They work by blocking the amount of acid that is produced in the stomach. Other widely used medications include proton pump inhibitors, which works more effectively than H2 blockers, and prokinetics which help the stomach empty faster. Your health care professional can determine if any of these medications is right to cure your acid reflux. In some cases, lifestyle changes and medication are not enough to control acid reflux. The next step in acid reflux treatment is to have some medical tests to diagnose the problem. Your physician may order a barium swallow. This is an x-ray test that will show any abnormalities, such as a hiatal hernia or ulceration. Another common test is an upper endoscopy. This is a more accurate test than a barium swallow. The doctor inserts a tiny flexible tube down your throat. This tube has a tiny camera on the end, so the doctor can see the surface of the esophagus, and spot any abnormalities. The doctor can see if there is any damage to the lining of the esophagus, and he may also take a sample of the cells from the lining by inserting a tiny set of tweezers down the tube. Although it is rare to have surgical treatment for acid reflux, for some it is a reasonable alternative to a lifetime of discomfort. Surgical treatments involve procedures that strengthen the muscle at the bottom of the esophagus to cure acid reflux. Acid reflux cures and treatments depend on how long you have had your symptoms, and how severe they are. It is important to seek the advice of a medical professional if you suffer from acid reflux more than three times per week, as it could signal a more serious condition.

The Astrology of the Financial Crisis
Jan 11th 2012, 08:31

In astrology planets are symbolic representations that have uncanny reflections in reality back on earth. There is no scientific basis that we can measure for this; but the symbols and meanings can help us gleam messages that help us understand our world somewhat the same fashion of dream interpretations. There are two significant astrological events going on; Pluto moving into Capricorn, and Saturn opposite Uranus. Pluto in Capricorn symbolizes the destruction and transformation of old respected companies, and the total reconstruction of governments. Uranus and Saturn symbolize polarization between the old way and new unpredictable ideas. Some of the vibration is extremely fear based. Saturn is a planet that can indicate fear and scarcity; it is an old school vibration. Uranus is the planet of unpredictable changes and breaking away from tradition. These two planets are aligning opposite each other, in this position they are opponents, who will win? Will it be fear and the old ways or innovation and finding a new path? The financial crises and bailout is only the tip of the iceberg of the problems the USA will be facing over the next several years. The charts of the US are indicating that there have been many secrets in the banking industry (and secrets regarding USA finances) and everything has not been exposed. The tides will turn even scarier for many people over the next few months. So what to do? Honor the principles of Saturn and Uranus. How can you work harder and be more productive in your life? What can you eliminate that you are not using? Being conscious of the resources we have is the first step. The right use of Saturn is using what you have and if you aren’t using something donate it. Do not hold onto possessions because you are afraid to let it go, fearing that you might need it for some obscure reason years down the road. Chances are it will only collect dust and clutter up you home. Read the books you already bought before you run to buy more. Use up the food in your cabinets; wear the clothes in your closet or move everything out so others are able to enjoy what you no longer need. Uranus wants you to invent new ways of living. Do things different, think different, if you are not making enough money for the life you want, do something different. If you are not happy in your relationships, try something different. Break up your old patterns of thinking to allow for major shifts in your life.
